After a cracking narrative? Pennie thinks the Christmas Story offers up the perfect masterclass!

A memorable cast of characters is a must

As I walked through the gym hall, all set out for that night’s nativity performance, I had a massive nostalgia kick, a wave which lifted me up and shifted me right back to my first school, St Josephs, in Bracknell.  I must have been about 4 or 5 and I can still remember to crackle of my plastic wings, the itch of my tinsel halo as I waited backstage, the musty chemical smell of a hundred hot feet in rubber-soled plimsoles.

Even back then I felt it, I knew I was part of something big, I had a small part to play in a seriously powerful story.  And it is still powerful for me, regardless of faith or belief, the Christmas Story is one which sticks.

Stumbling across all that nativity nostalgia happened when I was working in a primary school in Invergordon, north of Inverness, last week delivering a storytelling workshop to a funny and highly imaginative group of young carers for the Connecting Carers Charity, and it got me thinking more about the Christmas Story.

At first glance, it might seem like a simple religious narrative, but dig a little deeper, and you'll see that the Christmas Story offers up a masterclass in powerful storytelling, it has everything. As a communications practitioner and tutor, I can’t help wanting to rummage around in the guts of the story, take a bit of time to appreciate what we can learn which might supercharge our own storytelling skills, be it in business, personal life or any other creative endeavour.

After all, great story telling isn’t just for Christmas…

1. The Universal Appeal of the Christmas Story

The Christmas story resonates with so many people because it taps into universal themes — love, hope, joy, and the power of transformation. These are emotions that everyone can connect with, regardless of their background or beliefs.

Takeaway for your storytelling: When crafting a story, think about the universal themes that resonate with your audience. Whether you're telling a brand story or sharing a personal anecdote, relatable emotions make your message stick. Great stories often speak to something bigger than the specific details—they tap into what we all feel as human beings.

2. A Memorable Cast of Characters

Humble shepherds, wise kings, a choir of angels, a donkey, Inn keeper, not to mention Mary, Joseph and their baby son, - the Christmas story introduces us to a diverse cast of characters. Each person plays a crucial role in the unfolding of the narrative, making it rich with depth and intrigue.

Takeaway for your storytelling: A strong story needs a well-developed cast of characters. They don't have to be literal people—maybe they're your customers, a problem you're solving, or even an idea. Great stories have a combination of relatable heroes, quirky side characters, and maybe even some villains. It’s the unique traits and relationships between them that keep the story engaging so always take a moment to consider who are your cast members and what’s their role?

3. A Clear Conflict and Resolution

Every great story has a central conflict, and in the Christmas story, it’s the struggle to find a safe and peaceful place for the birth of a child in a tumultuous world. The resolution when it comes — the miraculous birth in a humble manger — is both surprising and heartwarming.

Takeaway for your storytelling: Your audience needs to understand the challenge or problem right from the start, followed by a resolution that feels satisfying. This could be the challenge your company solves or the transformation your product promises. A clear conflict and resolution make your story more memorable and impactful.

4. A Touch of Mystery and Wonder

There’s something magical about the Christmas story — the guiding star, the angelic visits, the sense of divine intervention. These elements of mystery and wonder capture our imagination and add depth to the story.

Takeaway for your storytelling: Adding an element of surprise, mystery, or wonder can elevate a simple story into something memorable. This doesn't mean you need angels or stars, but think about how you can inject excitement, unexpected twists, or the "wow" factor into your narrative. People remember stories that make them think or feel something extraordinary.

5. A Powerful Message

At its core, the Christmas story is about love and giving. It's a message that transcends time, culture, and geography. The story has been retold in countless ways, but its central message remains the same: the importance of compassion, hope, and joy.

Takeaway for your storytelling: Every great story has a purpose or message. Whether you're telling a story about your brand or a personal experience, make sure your story has a central theme or takeaway that reinforces what you stand for. People are drawn to stories that are meaningful, and a story without a purpose quickly fades into the background.

6. An Emotional Impact That Lasts

One of the reasons the Christmas story is so memorable is that it leaves an emotional imprint on us. Whether it's the imagery of a baby in a manger or the gathering of loved ones, it tugs at our hearts and stays with us long after the holiday season is over.

Takeaway for your storytelling: The most powerful stories evoke emotions. If you can make your audience feel something—whether it's joy, empathy, excitement, or inspiration—you’ve succeeded in creating a lasting memory. Strong emotional connections help your story stand the test of time and resonate with your audience long after they’ve encountered it so when you set out to write a story, set out your emotional ambition for it too.
